Karla's Story
Knee Surgery and Sunday Dinner
Karla Troester is an active woman. She has a large family and enjoys entertaining and cooking for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Over time, these activities became more and more difficult to enjoy due to the extreme knee pain she was experiencing.
“Both of my knees were severely damaged - so much that they were bone-on-bone. I would power through the pain, but it had gotten so bad that I couldn’t even walk around Wal-Mart anymore.”
We are lucky to have this hospital in our community
After putting it off for quite some time, she made the decision to have knee replacement surgery at Crossing Rivers Health.
“My husband and I both had cataract surgery here and both procedures were very successful. We were very pleased with the outcomes and the care we received. There was no doubt in my mind that I would have my knee replacement surgery here.”
After meeting with the orthopedic team at the Center for Specialty Care, Karla felt comfortable and confident in her decision.
“The surgeons were so confident, how could I not be confident? When someone has such confidence, you immediately feel comfortable.”
Karla appreciates the care she has received throughout her entire journey.
“I truly feel that we are very lucky to have this hospital in our community. My experience here was excellent. The nurses were fabulous. If I pushed the button for help, someone was there immediately if not sooner. Everyone was kind, compassionate, and gentle. We have wonderful doctors and wonderful nurses. You don’t have to travel out of town to receive top-notch care. I couldn’t have asked for any better care than I received right here in Prairie du Chien.”
Karla’s procedure went well and since she was close to home, she was lucky enough to have quite a few visitors during her recovery in the medical center.
Sunday dinner at Crossing Rivers Health
“On a typical Sunday, I am usually cooking a large meal and enjoying time with family. The Sunday after my procedure, my son, his wife and the two youngest grandchildren came to visit and ordered dinner trays from the dining room. The food was wonderful! The kids thought it was fabulous that they could go through the menu and pick their own options. The nurse even brought in some TV trays! It was just a huge morale booster to have my husband and my family here having Sunday dinner together, just like we normally would. The nurses and staff made us feel like we were right at home. It was very comforting and cheered me up immensely.”
I couldn’t ask for a better therapy department
Karla is actively participating in both physical and occupational therapy with the Crossing Rivers Health Rehab team.
“I am so appreciative that I was able to have surgery and rehab right here in Prairie du Chien. My husband is 86 years old and would not have been able to drive me back and forth to a different town for appointments. The therapy department has been wonderful in my recovery. They know what needs to be done and they help me do it. I couldn’t ask for a better therapy department.”
