Traveling to basketball game results in joyful, unexpected outcome
With medical provider and birthing plan in place, Tia Marshall felt as if she had everything set and ready to welcome baby Stephen into the world. While driving to Prairie du Chien for her 13-year-old son Christopher’s basketball game, baby Stephen decided to come early, and quickly.
"I could not have asked for a better provider"
“I had never met Dr. Matthew Olson before he stepped foot into my room in the Emergency Department. Ironically, as soon as he appeared, my water broke,” exclaimed Tia. She had presented to the Emergency Department at Crossing Rivers Health in labor, 12 days before her due date. “I could not have asked for a better provider. Dr. Olson kept me very calm and he was very thorough. He wanted to make sure I understood everything.” Tia added, “He spoke on my level, which I appreciated.”
Having so many familiar staff members involved turned out to be a wonderfully positive outcome
“I had my first son, Christopher, at the old hospital 13 years ago and I was lucky enough to have the same nurse, Mary, during the birth of Stephen as well. Tia shared that, although spontaneous, having so many familiar staff members involved in the delivery of her son turned out to be a wonderfully positive outcome after all.
"It's worth it to me to travel to Prairie du Chien and continue with Dr. Olson"
Tia shared that she had such a great experience, considering the circumstances, that she has decided to continue with Dr. Olson and the team at Crossing Rivers Health Clinic for follow-up and primary care for her family. Tia said, “I am from Bagley originally and currently live in the LaCrosse area. It’s worth it to me to travel to Prairie du Chien and continue with Dr. Olson for Stephen’s care.”
"The best part of the job is being able to follow up with my patients over the long term"
Dr. Matthew Olson said, “It was such a pleasant surprise to meet Ms. Marshall in the ER. I am sure delivering Stephen in Prairie du Chien was not what she had in mind. Ultimately, though, I am happy to say the hospital staff provided a great birth experience for her and I was privileged to be a part of that. Tia was with friends and family in the Birthing Center when she welcomed Stephen into the world. I feel honored that she is coming all the way down to Prairie du Chien from the La Crosse area for her primary care.” Dr. Olson added, “The best part of the job is being able to follow up with my patients over the long term—especially the babies we deliver.”
