Free classes ‘Active Parenting for Blended Families’ are being held on Tuesday evenings, November 3 through December 8, at Crossing Rivers Health Family Resource Center in Prairie du Chien. The evening starts with a free dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by the classes, 6:15 through 7:45 pm. Child care is offered at no cost as well.

Family Resource Center and Crawford County Human Services are partnering to offer the classes to teach the skills parents need to build a successful stepfamily.

Amanda Nagel, Parent Educator, will be facilitating the classes. She is a certified Family Life Educator. She said, “This class focuses on identifying challenges, avoiding unrealistic expectations, understanding different styles of parenting and the best techniques for relationship building within a new family unit.”

Parents will learn how to blend family histories, traditions, and values; cope with loss and encourage healthy grieving; and establish parental authority using non-violent discipline techniques that work. The classes also focus on effective communication skills and building new relationships based on respect and trust. Other topics include teaching responsibility, cooperation and other important values; preventing or stopping problems such as loyalty conflicts, power struggles, and more; coping with difficult topics such as drugs, violence and sex; and setting boundaries that work for the whole family, and encouraging children to be their very best.
