Laboratory Professionals Work Behind the Scenes to Get Results
From Barb Welsch, Laboratory Director
Crossing Rivers Health proudly joins the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science in honoring laboratory professionals during the week of April 21 – 27 and every week of the year.
The medical laboratory professionals at Crossing Rivers Health are key members of the health care team and are vital in providing quality patient care.
Vital role in the healthcare team
The role of the laboratory is to provide information that healthcare providers use to make life and death decisions. Laboratory professionals perform tests on blood, tissue, or other body fluids, interpret the results and help provide answers for a complete picture of a patient’s health.
It is estimated that 70% of all medical decisions are based on laboratory results.
Many are unaware of the many opportunities in the medical laboratory profession. There are many career paths from phlebotomy or assistant certificates to associate, bachelor, or doctorate degrees. A career in the laboratory may be a good fit if you:
- Have a strong interest in science
- Have a strong desire to help people
- Are detail-oriented
- Like to solve problems
