Experience a look inside life with dementia

Wednesday, June 5, 2024

According to the World Health Organization, the total number of new cases of dementia each year worldwide is nearly 7.7 million, implying one new case every four seconds. The Aging and Disability Center of Eagle Country, Crossing Rivers Health, AGE-u-cate® Training Institute, and DementiaLive® are collaborating to offer a free innovative program where community members can experience the challenges of living with dementia. DementiaLive® is a high-impact, dementia simulation experience that immerses participants into life with dementia, resulting in a deeper understanding of what it’s like to live with cognitive impairment and sensory change.

The event will take place at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien on Thursday, June 20 and Friday, June 21. Four sessions will be open to the public each day. During these session participants will have the opportunity to participate in a real-life simulation of dementia using specialized gear in a safe, experiential setting.

“As the population of people living with dementia rapidly expands, providers must learn new ways to understand and respond to the needs of these individuals,” explained Roby Fuller, Director of the Aging and Disability Center of Eagle Country. “DementiaLive® provides caregivers with a first-hand understanding of what dementia is and the constant struggle affecting individuals with dementia as they go about their daily lives with the hope that this greater understanding will lead to better care.”

Four 45-minute sessions are available to the public each day, but space is limited. Pre-registration is required. To register, contact the Aging and Disability Center at 608-326-0235 or 1-877-794-2372.
