Irene's Story: Hip Replacement

Thursday, September 14, 2023

I had been living with constant pain for two years due to a collapsed hip joint. The pain was holding me back from traveling, something I love. I knew I had to do something about the pain when I could no longer walk to my husband’s grave to put out flowers.

I talked to my primary care provider about my options and she recommended Kevin Klean, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon at Crossing Rivers Health. Having stayed at Crossing Rivers Health before, I knew that I would receive excellent care for my hip replacement surgery.

I talked to Dr. Klean about what hip replacement surgery would entail. He explained what to expect for surgery prep, the day of the surgery, and the recovery process.

To be eligible for hip replacement surgery, I had to lose at least 25 pounds. With help from Sierra Harper-Beutel, the Registered Dietitian at Crossing Rivers Health, I was able to lose more than 25 pounds. I continued meeting with her after my surgery and learned how foods that are high in protein help with the healing process.

Because my hip had collapsed, Dr. Klean had to do a total hip replacement, an extensive surgery. Because of this, I stayed in the hospital for 2 nights after my surgery. During my stay, I was treated so well. Everyone really cared and treated me with respect. I was never talked down to and they always answered all my questions.

I started rehabilitation at Crossing Rivers Health while still a patient in the hospital. After I was discharged, I continued to rehab twice a week for four weeks. My therapists, Paul and Melanie were very encouraging. They made sure I felt comfortable with the exercises but pushed me at the same time. I graduated from rehab early, thanks to their great care.

After my surgery, I was full of life again.

If you are considering hip replacement, do not wait! It gave me a new lease on life.
