Breast MRI
The Crossing Rivers Health Medical Imaging Department is proud to announce the addition of breast MRI scans to supplement its 3D mammogram and breast ultrasound program.
Crossing Rivers Health Medical Imaging Department has introduced breast MRI scans to enhance its breast imaging program, which already includes 3D mammograms and breast ultrasounds. Breast MRI is a valuable tool for detecting and evaluating breast disease, particularly in high-risk women, showing higher sensitivity for cancer detection compared to other methods. It is especially beneficial for women with dense breast tissue, where mammograms and ultrasounds might miss abnormalities. Breast MRI is used for several purposes, including pre-operative cancer assessment, screening the contralateral breast in high-risk cases, staging breast cancer, and monitoring responses to treatments like chemotherapy or hormonal therapy.
- Breast MRI is a valuable tool for detecting and evaluating breast disease.
- It shows higher sensitivity for cancer detection compared to mammography and ultrasonography, especially in high-risk women.
- Women with dense breast tissue present imaging challenges for mammograms and ultrasounds.
- MRI scans can see through dense areas and make abnormalities easily viewable by radiologists.
- Pre-operative assessment: Evaluating the extent of cancer in newly diagnosed patients for surgical planning.
- Contralateral breast screening: Screening in cases with increased bilateral risk, such as lobular carcinoma.
- Breast cancer staging: Planning treatment.
- Monitoring treatment response: Tracking tumor response to chemotherapy or hormonal therapy.
- Finding small cancers in high-risk women due to family history, dense breast tissue, prior breast cancer, prior radiation treatment, or genetic predisposition.
