Medical Ear Piercing

Medical ear piercing is a safe, clean, and comfortable ear-piercing option available at Crossing Rivers Health. Our primary care clinic will use the Blomdahl Ear Piercing system, a medical grade system available only to medical professionals. This piercing device, combined with the privacy and professionalism of a medical exam room and sterile techniques, will provide comfort and reassurance to parents and children. We offer a selection of medical-grade earrings specifically designed for optimal healing and to prevent the development of a nickel allergy. You or your child can choose the earring style from a selection at the office.

Where do we pierce?

We currently only pierce ear lobes.

Are there age restrictions?

Our medical professionals will generally pierce the ears of infants ages 3 months to 9 months, children 5 years of age and older, and adults.

  • This ensures that infants have received their first round of immunizations and allows the ear to grow big enough for more accurate earring placement. Infants are held in their parent’s arms during the procedure, and the worst part for them is when their head must be held still, and most babies cry only briefly.
  • Children are more active after 9 months of age, making the piercing experience more difficult. After this age, they are also more prone to picking at the earrings, which makes them more susceptible to infection.
  • For children over 5 years of age
    • It is essential that the child has requested to have their ears pierced and that the parent/guardian agrees.
    • The child needs to be able to sit still during the procedure and has to allow or participate in responsible aftercare to ensure a good outcome.
    • The child will sit beside the parent and lean against the parent’s shoulder. Teens will sit quietly on their own.
    • We will not hold a child down for this procedure as it is an elective cosmetic procedure. The staff reserves the right to cancel a procedure if they feel the situation may become unsafe due to the child’s inability to cooperate.

Children and parents alike appreciate the ability to pierce one ear at a time or single-handedly pierce two earlobes simultaneously.

How much does it cost?

We charge $100 to pierce both ears. The price includes medical grade plastic or titanium stud earrings, the cost of the procedure, and aftercare swabs.

Payment is due in full when you check in for your ear piercing appointment. Since this is a cosmetic procedure, it is not covered by your insurance and will not be billed to your insurance.

Do I need an appointment?

Ear piercing is done by appointment only. Contact Crossing Rivers Health Clinic at 608-357-2500 to schedule.

How do I take care of the pierced ears afterward?

Crossing Rivers Health provides aftercare instructions at your visit.

Never touch your ears with unclean hands.

  • Wash your newly pierced ears (on both sides) thoroughly twice a day. Do not remove the earrings when cleansing. When showering/washing your hair, use liquid soap and rinse thoroughly with clean running water. Dry with a Kleenex or Q-tip.
  • Supplementary cleansing is done with Blomdahl Piercing Aftercare cleansing swabs, which are gentle on the skin. The swabs make cleaning between your ears and the earrings/earring backs possible. Allow to air dry. Use a new cleansing swab for each ear each time. Do not clean with alcohol.
  • Make sure that the area around the holes is kept clean, dry, and airy at all times.
  • Cover your ears when applying makeup, hair spray, spray perfume, hair dye, etc.
  • Take extra care when putting on/pulling off clothing over your head to prevent the earrings from getting caught.

After 6 weeks, we recommend changing earrings.

  • The Blomdahl ear piercings studs we use are a little thicker (1.3 mm) than the standard earring post (1.0 mm), creating a larger piercing hole which:
    • It makes it easier to switch to everyday earrings after the healing period.
    • It reduces the risk of repeatedly re-injuring the ear piercing site when replacing earrings, reducing the risk of piercing site infection.
  • Earrings are also designed with longer posts to encourage air circulation and promote healing.
  • Our earring backs completely encapsulate the tip of the post, which leaves enough room for air to pass behind the earlobe and also ensures that they won’t fall off.
  • Blomdahl offers a variety of medical jewelry that can be purchased online.

What are the risks?

There is a risk of infection anytime the skin is broken. We reduce this risk significantly by:

    • Using sterile, single-use piercing cassettes.
    • Providing specific aftercare instructions.
  • There is a risk of bleeding anytime the skin is broken. However, the earlobes do not contain significant blood vessels, so this risk is minimal.
  • The pain is brief and similar to a vaccine. Ask us about using numbing spray.
  • Keloids are large, raised scars. Risk factors for keloids include:
    • Family history of keloids
    • Darker skin pigmentation
    • Age > 11 years
